  • You need a PDF copy of an AI file for design, print, or tracing.
  • PDF is the format requested by another app, client, or publishing step.
  • Paths, strokes, and raster details can change between formats, so reviewing the PDF result matters before delivery.

Format notes

AI to PDF details

AI and PDF belong to vector workflows, but they can store details differently. Paths, strokes, and raster details can change between formats.

For best results, check the converted PDF file before sending it to another person, publishing it, or deleting the original AI source.

After conversion

Check the PDF output

  • Open the PDF file in the software that will use it next.
  • Compare important content against the original AI file.
  • Run a smaller test file first if the source contains unusual formatting or embedded data.
Troubleshooting

If the conversion does not work

  • If the conversion fails, confirm the file extension and try exporting a fresh AI copy from the source app.
  • If the output opens but looks different, simplify complex content in the source file and convert again.
